Don’t forget to check out our reloading equipment if you need bullets, presses, dies, and accessories to reload your own cartridges!

Below are some answers to common questions our customers have about our ammo.

What Is the Difference Between a Cartridge and a Round?

While some people think ammo cartridges and rounds are different, they are actually two terms for the same thing. A cartridge consists of the bullet casing, the primer, gunpowder, and the bullet. The common term is round. The only thing that some people confuse is by calling all cartridges “bullets,” as the bullet is only the projectile at the end of the cartridge.

Are .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO the Same Round?

This answer is a little more complicated. While the bullets and cartridges for 223 and 556 ammo are the same size, they function differently. A 5.56x45mm NATO round is the military load, which means it has more powder and is loaded to a higher pressure. On the other hand, a .223 Remington round is the civilian version. Even though a standard AR 15 can shoot both rounds, your weapon may not be rated to handle 5.56x45mm NATO, as the extra pressure can damage the barrel. The easiest way to know if your AR 15 can handle either one is to check the barrel. If it is listed as 5.56x45mm NATO or it says .223 WYLDE, you can shoot either round.

Is Ammo Still Good After 10 Years?

Ammunition can last for a long time if stored properly, but the shelf life can vary depending on the type of ammunition and the storage conditions. In general, ammunition that is stored in a cool, dry place and away from direct sunlight will last longer than ammunition that is exposed to high temperatures and humidity. Ammo cans can help preserve the lifespan of your rounds.

It is not recommended to use ammunition that is over 10 years old unless it has been properly stored. The older the ammunition is, the more likely it is to have degraded, which can affect its performance and safety. If you are unsure about the condition of the ammunition, it is best to err on the side of caution and not use it.

Is your favorite brand of ammo out of stock, and you’re wondering what to buy instead?

Lots of Ammo

Let’s talk about the best ammo brands out there for hunters, target shooters, and those looking to defend themselves

With ammo prices starting to regulate after the last shortage, many of us are thinking about stocking up on ammo.

Give us all the ammo!

If you’re looking for another brand because your preferred flavor isn’t available, or you just want an idea of which brands work, here’s an overview of the best ammo brands around.

Note: just because something isn’t on this list doesn’t mean it isn’t good ammo. It may just mean it’s a little overpriced or hard to get a hold of. There’s plenty of good ammo out there.

But the best is right here.

You heard us — the BEST.

Also, before you come for us in the comments…this isn’t in order of best to worst — just the order we felt like typing it in. We know you like [insert brand name here] the best, but please be gentle in the comments — we have feelings, too!

How We Chose the Best Ammo Brands

Input from this article came from various members of the Pew Pew Tactical team. We are constantly testing guns, both new and old, in various calibers and conditions.

The Pew Pew Tactical Team

We used our combined shooting and purchasing experience to pick the best ammo brands based on availability, performance, and each manufacturer’s catalog of offerings.

Best Ammo Brands

1. Federal Premium

Federal Premium Ammunition has been around in one form or another since the 1920s. Since then, it has become one of the premier ammunition manufacturers during that time.

Federal Logo

They’re so prolific you’re almost guaranteed to find Federal ammo on the shelf just about anywhere ammo is sold (assuming the panic buyers haven’t snapped it all up).

No matter what type of ammo you’re looking for, they’re sure to have some options available, from cheap birdshot and plinking-grade .22 LR all the way up to more expensive match-grade centerfire rifle ammo for you PRS folks.

SW22 with Federal .22LR

Gold Medal Match is a good option if you’re looking to hit something really, really far away.

They also have several of their own calibers floating around, such as the .224 Valkyrie that was all the rage a few years ago and some other more esoteric things like the .327 Federal Magnum.

No, that’s not a typo. It really is a thing that exists, and it’s for…stuff.

.327 Federal Magnum compared to other .32 calibers

Ostensibly, it’s another stab at .357 Magnum power with a smaller cartridge. This means a full six shots in a revolver, whereas .357 Magnum would leave you with just 5.

Should you rush out and buy one? Maybe not, but it is pretty cool, and I bet none of your buddies have one.

And don’t worry, Federal and other manufacturers make plenty of defensive and target loads for it.

Federal Gold Medal .223 69gr

Finally, the American Eagle line (the red box on every ammo shelf) is a great budget option that can really run with some of the more expensive stuff, particularly 9mm and .45 ACP.

2. CCI

Cascade Cartridges Inc has been around since 1951 when the company was founded by Richard Speer and Arvid Nelson.

Cascade Cartridge Inc Logo

CCI is probably the biggest name in rimfire ammo…and with good reason.

Richard Speer

Their Stinger and Standard Velocity .22 LR are two of the most popular rounds on the planet, and you can find them for sale just about everywhere.

Popular .22LR Ammo

Their Mini-Mag .22 LR is also one of the best of the best.

They’re mostly associated with rimfire ammo, including .22 LR, .22W MR, and .17 HMR.

They don’t just make awesome rimfire ammo, though. CCI produces one of our most beloved handgun practice ammo lines — Blazer Brass.

CCI Blazer Brass 9mm

This is some of the best budget-friendly centerfire ammo on the market, and you best believe we’ve shot thousands of rounds of it. For cheap plinking ammo that could do as competition ammo in a pinch, it’s not bad.

Check out some possibly in-stock CCI ammo…

3. Speer

This company is owned by the same parent company as CCI (and just about every other shooting sports and outdoor company on the market).

It was founded by Vernon Speer, brother of Richard Speer, the founder of CCI.

Speer Logo

The idea, at least as I was told, was that CCI would make cartridges and primers, and Speer would make bullets.

Today, Speer does make a lot of bullets, but they also make high-end defensive ammo.

Vernon Speer (left) and Jack O’Connor

They’re one of the premier manufacturers of defensive ammo in general, with many major police departments and government agencies trusting their hollowpoints above all else.

Speer 230 gr Gold Dot

Speer is so beloved by LEO shooters that they actually have a line of ammo called “Lawman” designed specifically for duty use.

Speer Lawman .357 sig

They also make the ever-popular Gold Dot line, which is one of the industry standards for carry ammo.

Speer Gold Dot 45 ACP 185gr

Oh, and just like CCI, they make all their stuff right here in the USA — Lewiston, Idaho, to be specific.

4. Sellier & Bellot

“S&B” or Sellier & Bellot, is a Czech manufacturer that’s been in the ammunition business since the days of percussion caps.

Sellier & Bellot Ammo Logo

They’re actually one of the oldest continuously-functioning companies in the entire world.

S&B even made percussion caps for the French infantry following the death of Napoleon.

In other words, while the name may be less familiar to those outside Europe, they are a company worth knowing.

Producing a variety of ammunition, they’re known for excellent match-grade stuff and high-end hunting ammo.

Their huge catalog also includes things 6.5×55 Swede and .303 British. So, if you own an older European gun, particularly a milsurp of some kind, there’s a good chance they make ammo for it.

5. Prvi Partizan

Prvi Partizan is another European manufacturer worth knowing. They are another company with a long history, dating back to 1928.

This Serbian company primarily made ammunition for the Serbian Army and national police units.

Prvi Partizan Logo

Today, Prvi Partizan ammo is available all over the world, including your local sporting goods store.

They are actually the third largest ammo supplier to the U.S., believe it or not.

And if you happen to have, say, a rifle you picked up at a gun show that’s chambered in something ridiculous like 7.65x53mm Argentine…there’s a good chance Prvi Partizan makes rounds for it.

K31 and PPU ammo

They’re actually one of the only manufacturers producing 8mm Lebel.

Of course, they also make some more standard offerings as well, and they’re all rock solid.

Seriously — they make everything.

Prvi Partizan is one of the easier-to-find budget-plinking options around.

It’s definitely military-grade and a long way from match quality, but it does go bang every time.

6. Wolf

Oh, Wolf.

If you know anything about ammo, you know that Wolf, like Tula below, is not necessarily a byword for quality. They produce primarily steel-cased rounds for military firearms.

Wolf Logo

If you’re looking for 9mm, 5.56, or 7.62, and you aren’t going to be defending life and liberty with them…Wolf isn’t so bad.

Yes, it’s low-quality ammo. No, it’s not going to stand up against the more expensive offerings. But it’s also cheaper. Much cheaper, in some cases.

@ Tula and Wolf

They mostly make FMJ ammo, but there’s something to be said for the “buy it cheap and stack it deep” mentality — particularly if want training ammo.

If you shoot like this at the range, you’re gonna want Wolf ammo.

And that’s why Wolf (and Tula) are on this list of “best” manufacturers. When you want to rip through 200 rounds at the range with your buddies without having to hide the credit card bill, look no further.

There’s a certain gleeful joy in turning money into noise. We’d be the first to admit that sometimes you have to pew pew just for the sake of pew pew.

So, with that in mind, remember that just because something isn’t top-of-the-line, that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth your time.

In the case of Wolf, if you’re looking for ammo that goes bang and won’t break the bank, you found it.

BUT…they also have Taiwanese-manufactured brass .223 that kicks butt.

7. TulAmmo

Unless, of course, you’d rather pick up some TulAmmo. TulAmmo is made by Tula, a Russian arms company about a three-hour drive South of Moskow.

TulAmmo Logo

You Mosin Nagant fans probably recognize the name, and yes, this is the company that made several bajillion Mosins for the Russian army. They helped beat the Nazis.

100 Nazi Scalps, courtesy of Tula!

Today, their ammo is widely known as one of the better cheap and cheerful options when it comes to plinking rounds.

Until about a decade ago, they actually made all of Wolf’s ammo, so they’re very similar, but I’ve always had better luck with TulAmmo. Your mileage may vary.

Tulammo

That said, both are good and specialize in polymer-coated, steel-cased ammo in military calibers. However, neither will win any accuracy awards.

Overall, don’t tear yourself up choosing between the two. Go with the cheaper option; that’s what you’re here for, right?

8. Hornady

This is a name you’re probably already aware of…but we’re going to talk about them anyway because, holy crap, they make good stuff.

Hornady Logo

Seriously, Hornady is far and away one of the best major manufacturers of premium ammo –if for nothing else than sheer consistency and availability.

If you’re looking for off-the-shelf ammo that can compete with hand-loaded stuff, this is the place to start your search.

Hornady Lever Revolution .45-70 vs 5.56

Their ELD-M line of centerfire rifle ammo is particularly good and is a favorite around the office for testing long-range setups, especially in 6.5 CM, .308 Win, and other rifle cartridges in that class.

They developed 6.5CM, so it makes sense they’d do well with it.

6.5 Creedmoor

Beyond that, this ammo maker produces some of the finest defensive munitions, with the Critical Defense and Critical Duty lines both being extremely popular with concealed carriers and police officers, respectively.

9. Winchester

You want to talk about a legend…Winchester is the legend. And their ammo is a big part of that reputation.

“Winchester white box” is the gold standard for middle-of-the-road ammo almost anywhere you go.

Winchester Logo

They began making ammo back in 1873 and were one of the first companies to really bring together ammo and firearms manufacturing. Not to mention, they’re responsible for helping make firearms such an institution in America, particularly after the First World War.

Winchester Forged 9mm

This company makes its products in Alton, Illinois, including its rifle, pistol, and shotgun offerings.

Besides their standard “white box” offerings that come in every common caliber you can imagine, they offer defensive ammo in their Silvertip line, and they leaned into the law-enforcement market with the Active Duty line.

Rest assured, whatever ammo you need, you can find it in a Winchester box.

10. PMC

PMC ammunition is made by Poongsan Corporation (no, I didn’t make that name up) in South Korea.

They specialize in everything from small arms ammunition all the way up to artillery shells. In other words, if it goes boom, they know about it.

PMC Ammo Logo

The company has only been around since the late 60s, but in that short time, they’ve become one of the most prevalent manufacturers in the world.

Every piece of ammo they make is manufactured to the standard of South Korean and NATO allied militaries. So, you know, it’s good stuff. Not great, mind you, but no military ammo is going to win you accuracy medals.

Yee-up!

This is good, honest, hard-working, and dependable ammo. Very working-class stuff here, and that’s why we love it.

PMC Bronze .223 55gr

They offer mostly centerfire rifle and pistol ammo, with an emphasis on military-style FMJs. Not a lot of hunting options, but for ratting away for the apocalypse, or just general target practice, PMC is good stuff.

11. Fiocchi

An Italian company, Fiocchi was founded in 1876 by Giulio Fiocchi. The company is still in the Fiocchi family’s hands — making it one of the oldest family businesses still operating.

Fiocchi Logo

Based out of Lecco, Italy, their products make their way around the world.

Fiocchi is a huge manufacturer, and they produce a genuinely staggering amount of ammo for all kinds of centerfire and rimfire firearms. But their big thing has always been shotgun shells.

Fiocchi 12ga Birdshot, Opened

Of course, it’s a lot easier to get a hunting shotgun in most European countries, so people tend to gravitate towards those over pistols and rifles, but still.

Fiocchi makes every kind of shotgun shell you can imagine, from cheap birdshot to serious defensive buckshot to slugs to freaking birdshot tracers for trap shooting.

The company also makes handgun and rifle ammo. Like Prvi Partizan and others, they manufacture some interesting niche cartridges like the historic .455 Webley and .303 British.

Oh, and to make things even better, even though it’s an Italian company, over 3/4ths of the ammo sold under the Fiocchi name in the U.S. is manufactured by American workers in Missouri.

12. Remington

We know, we know, Remington has been through the wringer when it comes to bankruptcy and buying/selling. But hear us out.

They recently moved away from Remington after the company filed for bankruptcy and is now housed under Vista Outdoor — ya’ know, the one that owns Federal.

Since its move to Vista, the company has steadily churned out all sorts of ammunition — from rimfire to shotgun and everything in between.

Come to us, sweet, sweet brass.

Overall, we like the direction that Remington’s ammunition seems to be headed. And in an ammo shortage, every little bit counts, right?

While we probably won’t tote it in our daily carry guns, we do appreciate the value the company brings to range days, training, and plinking.

13. AAC

Looking for another company to grab 9mm, 5.56, or .300 BLK?

AAC is one to watch out for. This ammo maker uses state-of-the-art machining to bring some decent ammo to those who just want basic calibers.

AAC 5.56 55gr

We’ve used AAC in some of our tests and have found it to be reliable. Not to mention, it usually comes at a pretty decent price.

We like to save money without forfeiting performance, and AAC seems to offer that capability.

AAC 115gr 9mm

The company’s ammo is great for training or days at the range when you need to work on your skills without taking out a second mortgage.

I like my target ammo to match my self-defense ammo by weight and muzzle velocity. Norma’s ammo matches up almost exactly with hornady’s 124 grain plus P critical duty and hornady 380 critical defense.

I like the 124 grain instead of the 135 grain just because it has slightly higher ft lbs of energy coming out of the barrel.

You should do an article on the best remanufactured ammo brands. Ammos costs are up and remanufactured is normally cheaper. Just want to know what the brands you can trust are.

How could you mention Wolf/Tula (122gr … the crap) and leave out Wolf/Barnaul (123, 124, 124HP … the “good” stuff) ? The groupings are day and night apart. Tula is pretty much steel target /watermelon fodder while the Barnaul is legit hog killing Ammo. Not that it matters since Russia Ammo days are pretty well done thanks to the watermelon head lost on a stage or White House lawn somewhere.

An interesting read. I tend to put things together and expect them to make sense. Ammo is starting to read like a wine list. XYZ ammo is good but only on vintage years. Accuracy? Mine is consistently bad. Consistency, it seems to follow me no matter what the gun or ammo.

Just getting back to shooting after many years. Till now, I've never seen ammo fail to fire.

I had roughly 10 boxes of 22s that were, best guess, 30 years old every one fired fine. New stuff and 3-4 duds out of 300.

Left out some great ammo (Magtech), added in some dirty crap ammo (Tul, Privi, Wolf). Useless article.

I don’t know why you stopped doing the videos of the article where you can hear the article instead of reading everything. I am an older person who doesn’t see as good as I used to and enjoyed the video. That being said. This article made no mention of the cleaning requirements after using the different ammo. PMC and blazer are both kind of dirty powdered ammo. Also reliability issues with some of your picks is a concern which wasn’t addressed. I think you could have done much better with this article. It’s still pretty good and informative though it could have been better. Thanks for your efforts.

Surprised not to see MagTech offerings. I find the quality much higher than half of the above.

I'm a big fan of Hornady's Critical Duty for Self Defense loads. In 9mm, the 135 gr offering is more accurate out of my SIG P365 than SIG's proprietary ammo offering. I use the 135 gr +P Critical Duty in my M9, and the 175 gr .40 S&W +P in my Walther PPQ M2.

I've never used any steel cased ammo. I reload my own target ammo, so I don't tend to buy "plinking or target" ammo very often. That may change since the cost of powder and primers are still way too high to show any cost savings from reloading. Primers especially, saw a nearly 300% markup since the Plandemic. I used to buy a 1,000 for $30 - $35/case. Now, it's a $100 - $150 case price.

I have been satisfied with Freedom Munitions. I have purchased various flavors of their 9mm ammo ( new, reman, steel; 115, 124, 147, 165 ). I usually get their bulk stuff now when they run a special with free shipping. All of their ammo has never failed to go pewpew in any of my firearms.

I've run through several hundred rounds of Freedom Munitions .45 ACP with my S&W and XDM-E with no issues. Great plinking ammo at a decent price. My prefered ammo is PMC X-Tac for 5.56 and PMC Bronze .45 ACP. Haven't found the PMC ammo to be dirty and it's possible to get great deals if you look around a bit. I

I've learned the hard way not to use subsonic ammo in a semiauto .22 pistol. I even had lack of ejection with a well-known Swedish brand. I was surprised, because I'd had no issues using their .303 British ammo long ago.

Yep. Agree with you on this. Norma (Ruag), is very reliable, from their 115 thru 147 gr. 9mm. Good ammo, fair prices. IWI: Wow. Their 77gr HPBT 5.56 is Good ammo in my Springfield Saint, and my Ruger Mini 14 likes it as well. Their 9mm is nothing to sneeze at either.

For hunting and match shooting, Norma beats even Hornady in consistency and quality. You can't find a better quality factory match or hunting ammo than Norma. You can get slightly better with hand loads, but only if you're a perfectionist when it comes to hand loading.

Sellior & Bellot is my go-to choice for range ammo. Clean, no misfires and compact packaging makes for easy storage. For EDC I'm sold on Hornady Critical Defense or Critical Duty for Self-Defense.

The clock is ticking on Tula. Biden banned all ammunition that is manufactured or imported from Russia. Companies have until the expiration date of their current import permits. After that, no more.

That means Tula has to move their operations or their days are numbered. Wolf carries ammo from Ukraine, Germany, Taiwan, and "other European countries", but they do get a lot from Russia as well. So Wolf will have to come up with other suppliers to replace their Russian suppliers.

We'll most likely see more imports from other countries increase to fill the market gap, particularly for 7.62x39mm. I've noticed a few lesser-known brands popping up more: Belom (Serbia), Igman (Bosnia), MaxxTech (Bosnia), and Mesko (Poland).

Very informative article and enjoyable to read. I noticed the author’s byline is now included at the top of the article, under the title. Also the font is now much easier to read, and the photos seem larger and much sharper. Thank you for these significant changes.

We are .22lr plinkers...we use the cheapest bulk ammo we can find for our lever and single action firearms, any brand will go bang in those guns, but we prefer Remington, Aguila, and Federal (In thousands of rounds we do experience inconsistent ammo and the occasional total dud, but for a few pennies a round we can live with it)...in our autos CCI and Remington have been the best, but we prefer to keep the CCI stashed...for our larger caliber handguns again we prefer the cheapest brands we can find, and have had zero problems with any brand...the 'good stuff' is either loaded for home/carry or stashed...we try hard to not make this rocket science when enjoying ourselves -it goes bang, we good...

Hi Megan; enjoyed the article. I just picked up 1000 rds of brass-cased, 123 gr 7.62x39 ammo of the Polish MESKO brand, and I don’t know if it’s corrosive or not. Seller is Tactical Shit Shop (I’m not making that up!)

Any info you can share in this stuff?

I was looking at some US Cartridge 124 Grain Hornady XTP ammunition, listed as factory new. $1.00 per round.

Should I purchase this ammo?

Updated February 2024: Added new CA ammo ruling and site specifics

So many online ammo websites, right?

Find out the best places to buy ammunition online from our own positive experiences and fails.

.357 Magnum, anyone? (I’ll answer for you: yes, please!)

We’ll also cover recommended brands, types of bullets to buy, what is a “good” price, and unfortunately…restrictions based on your state.

And the current best deals for popular calibers.

Different Bullet Tips (L TO R: FMJ, Soft, Open, Ballistic)

February 2024 Update: Ammo prices are still pretty high after the Israel/Palestine conflict created additional demand in October with some softening in the new year.

On January 31, 2024, Judge Benitez has struck down a California law requiring residents to do a background check before buying ammo which was back in effect on February 6, 2024. Sorry California!

AAC, Blazer, & PMC seem to be the most in-stock varieties.

Best Places to Buy Ammo Online

1. Palmetto State Armory (PSA)

My go-to online place for buying BULK ammo is Palmetto State Armory.

They will usually be one of the best prices for cases (1,000) rounds of popular calibers…like .223/5.56, 9mm, and .45 ACP.

And sometimes you’ll even find free shipping for cases…otherwise, it may be about $20 to 30 bucks.

Their shipping used to be excruciating slow about ~5 years ago, but now with their in-house firearms selling like hotcakes…they’ve got their ammo shipping down as well.

2. Ammunition Depot

New on the list starting Summer 2023 is Ammunition Depot due to their free shipping over $149, no code needed.

You know when you’re buying ammo it’s pretty easy to go over $149.

And I know what you’re thinking…their prices must be higher to justify it. But amazingly they aren’t and can rival PSA prices for popular calibers.

My most recent order with them as been for 6 cent per round .22LR and as of right now their 9mm is 27 cents per round shipped.

I find a lot of other retailers skimp in website tech or their shipping departments. There have been too many times where the following has happened:

I find a great price, order, my credit card is charged, and then I get an email a couple days later that they are out of stock. Now I can either wait for a backorder or get a refund which ties up my credit card for a week.

I order and it takes a week or two to ship out my order.

I try to see my shipping costs and I have to create a login and enter all my details first.

They are California friendly as of publication as well.

Their claim to fame is being the largest ammo dealer in Arizona and top 10 in the entire US. I’ve been ordering from them steadily this past year and it always arrives.

From power tools to guns and ammo, Sportsman’s Guide has almost everything under their roof – kind of like a Cabela’s and Harbor freight mixed into one!

While their standard deals are good, their deals with a Sportsmen’s Guide membership are even better! 10% off of gear and 5% off of guns and ammo, those savings can add up huge in a year of shooting.

Other Suggestions

These didn’t make our regular list but desperate times call for desperate measures and they might have some stuff left…

Gorilla Ammunition (niche manufacturer with subsonic loads and 8.6 BLK)

Sportsman’s Warehouse

Kentucky Gun Company

Cheaper Than Dirt (Extreme Price Gouging)

Or if you’re looking for the most up-to-date stuff in stock…check out our In Stock Ammo page with all our ammo widgets.

Why Buy Ammo Online?

A survey of gun owners conducted by the NSSF found that 53% of gun owners bought ammo online and that 86% of those cited lower prices and quantity discounts.

Lots of Ammo

I’ve only bought ammo a couple of times at gun stores or the range because I forgot to bring my online bought ammo.

But every time I go, it’s not surprising to see prices 50% higher than what you’ll find online…even after factoring in shipping!

I’d like to also add in variety and tax savings.

Without the restraint of a physical location, online sellers can have tons of selection.

Some guns just like different ammo better than others.  I like to order a couple of types to see what shoots best in a new gun, and then later put in a bulk order.  Plus, our suggestions will likely be out of state for you…so no sales tax!

Recommended Ammo Brands

These are just my recommended ammo brands based on price, availability, and what worked in my guns.

I shoot a decent amount so I usually go for the budget brands. I haven’t had a problem with any of the below.

Popular Pistol Calibers

AAC: Currently the most affordable (and available) for 9mm and 5.56. Good stuff that has always gone bang.

PMC: Cheap and plentiful rounds that I have used in almost all my calibers. Made in South Korea.

Federal/American Eagle: Also cheap and plentiful rounds made in the USA. I use them interchangeably but word on the street is that AE is Federal’s line that is sold online and in gunshops. Federal Champion is their budget line usually found at Walmart.

Blazer: Another budget brand that sometimes seems too good to be true. Be aware that the super cheap one might be aluminum cased instead of regular brass. I’ve never tried aluminum casings in pistols since I wanted to keep my brass for eventual reloading, but my buddies and I have had no problems in handguns running Blazer Brass.

Tula: My go-to AK round brand. Super cheap with polymer coated steel cases.  Who cares…it’s an AK!

Lake City: While US government-owned, Lake City also sells surplus ammo and brass through a lot of vendors. They also sell parts and supplies to other brands so it’s not uncommon to find ammo from Federal with brass or bullets made by Lake City. All of it is quality stuff!

Others: I’ve also had good success with Sellier & Bellot, and Fiocchi, but they are normally a little higher in price. And if in doubt, just Google the brand and caliber to see if there’s any complains in online gun forums.

Recommended Ammo for Common Calibers

A quick overview of the different calibers and types of bullets out there so you’ll know all the useful acronyms such as FMJ for full metal jacket or JHP for jacket hollow point.

More Popular Ammo Brands

We’ll also have some suggestions for choosing a self-defense gun as well.

Common Rifle Calibers

Even though we go through 18 calibers in the article above, you’ll probably only see/need a handful of the most common ones. So we’ll start with those first.

223/5.56 Ammo

Daniel Defense AR-15

The round of the super-popular AR-15.

Haven’t gotten one yet? Check out our Definitive Guide to the AR-15.

You can shoot .223 ammo in a 5.56 barrel, but since 5.56 may have higher pressures, you should not shoot them in a .223 barrel.

Popular 5.56 and .223 Ammo

I always get my barrels in 5.56 so there is no problem. Ammo is around 25-40 cents each at the most standard 55 gr bullet.

You’ll also see some designations of XM and M followed by 193 or 855 for Federal & American Eagle.

XM means it was rejected from military use for some reason but still meets commercial specifications. M means it meets mil-spec. 193 means it is a 55-grain FMJ-BT (boat tail) while 855 is 62-grain FMJ-BT with a steel penetrator for added penetration against hardened targets.

9mm Ammo

9mm 147 Federal Hydrashok HST

I’ve shot over 10,000 rounds of 9mm before I started reloading for competitions.

Price is around 30 cents a round. I prefer 124-grain instead of 115-grain which seems snappier in recoil, but I recommend trying out both to see which one you like better.

9mm (115gr vs 124gr vs 147gr)

I also recommend sticking with brass cartridges instead of cheaper aluminum/steel.

We cover everything in Best 9mm Ammo for Self-Defense & Range. But here’s a couple of our favorites…

.45 ACP Ammo

.45 ACP Ball vs Hollowpoint

I’ve shot over 2,500 rounds of 45 ACP and also go with my standard budget list of manufacturers. Price is around 40-50 cents a round.

There’s not too much variation in weight so I stick with the standard 230-grain.

The extensive list is at Best .45 ACP Ammo for Home Defense & Target Practice but here is our main pick.

.22 LR Ammo

Reasonably priced .22 LR ammo is getting easier to find at <8 cents a round.

.22LR (CCI vs Winchester vs Super Colibri)

So what is out there (and in stock) is much more expensive.

We’ve compiled an extensive list in Best .22 LR Ammo for Accuracy, Plinking, & Hunting.

Popular .22LR Ammo

But…the CCI at 40-grain is my go-to for .22 LR in my Ruger 10/22.

CCI – 40 gr (Likely in stock but expensive)

Federal Automatch Target – 325 Rounds – 40 gr

Sellier & Bellot – 500 Rounds – 38 gr

7.62×39 Ammo

Assorted 7.62×39 (FMJ, Open, Soft, FMJ)

The good ole AK-47 rounds. My rule is to go with ammo from countries that used the AK but to watch out for corrosive ammunition (which is pretty good shooting stuff, you just need to put more effort in cleaning afterward).

You also need to check with your shooting range rules to see if they allow magnetic (bi-metal) or non-brass ammunition such as Wolf/Tula.

Popular 7.62×39 Ammo

If they don’t, you will have to go with more expensive brands or corrosive ammunition.  The general weight is around 122-grain and costs from 25 to 35 cents each. Brass cartridges will be more.

Tula – Assorted – 122 gr FMJ (Magnetic + Steel, my favorite if the range doesn’t care)

Wolf – Assorted – 123gr FMJ (Magnetic + Steel, WPA Polyformance is the cheapest)

PMC – 20 Rounds – 123 gr FMJ (Non-Magnetic + Brass, if the range cares)

 7.62×39 Self Defense Ammo

Sellier & Bellot – 20 Rounds – 123 gr SP

Hornady SST – 50 Rounds – 123 gr SST

.308/7.62x51mm Ammo

Assorted 7.62x51mm (MEN 147gr, PPU 165gr, PPU 180gr, Gold Medal 168gr

Another of those rounds that are almost identical but with some differences in pressure and dimensions.

Unless you really know what you are doing, keep using the round intended for your rifle.

Popular .308 Winchester and 7.62x51mm Ammo

Since most 308/7.62x51mm ammo will be in long-range (sniper) rifles, we’ll also include some Match ammo.

Most commercial ammo will be around 147-grains and around 60 to 70 cents each while match ammo is around 168-grains and $1.50 per round. I went almost straight into reloading to get the max accuracy out of my guns so take my suggestions with a grain of salt.

All .308/7.62 ammo (Lucky, Brownells).

.308 Ammo

PMC – 20 Rounds – 147 gr FMJ-BT (Shot my first hundred with this)

Fiocchi – 20 Rounds – 150 gr FMJ-BT

Federal Match King – 20 Rounds – 168 HP-BT (For precision shooting)

7.62x51mm Ammo

Federal – 20 Rounds – 149 gr FMJ XM80C

Federal – 20 Rounds – 168 gr Open Tip Match (For precision shooting)

308/7.62x51mm Self Defense

Federal Power Shok – 20 Rounds – 150 gr SP

Shotgun Ammo

12ga Shotgun Shells, Opened (L to R: Bird, Buck, Slug)

The shotgun is unique since there are so many different types of ammunition.

We’ll cover basic target birdshot (#8-#9 is great for clay shooting), buckshot, and slugs.  Remember for birdshot, the larger the #, the smaller the pellets. And that 00 (double-aught) buckshot is great for self-defense while slugs are one solid piece of lead.

Popular 12ga Shotgun Ammo

2-3/4 inch refers to the length of the shell which will fit almost all 12ga shotguns. The problem arises from 3 inch magnum shells.

Prices will vary from 25 cents for target shots to around 50 cents — $1 for buckshot and slugs.  I’ve shot tons of Fiocchi and Estate birdshot, and love the Winchester Military Buckshot.

Winchester 12ga 00 Buckshot

I ordered some ammo from Bereli after seeing this article said they are now "California friendly". I live in California and have the worst time trying to find certain calibers in a stock anywhere. I placed an order with Bereli and received an email a short time later advising me to provide them with an FFL holder address to ship the ammo to.

So apparently they're NOT shipping directly to customers so I had to cancel the order. FYI

How could you have missed so many other opportunities that actually have ammo in stock and are so much easier to find the specific type of ammo one might be looking for. Don’t get me wrong, PSA, etc carry ammo, but that’s not their main purpose. And when you have a company trying to be the “Wal-Mart” of guns/ammo/etc online never work out for the consumer. It’s better to have a designated ammo provider to get the best deals of ammo online. IE. SGAmmo, Bulk Ammo, Lucky Gunner, etc. and let the consumer find the best deals for whatever their needs may be.

Also Optic planet has hosed me on orders before by claiming they ran out of an item after I completed the order when ammo prices jumped up....refused to complete order with alternate source at same price.

I use The Mag Shack and Lucky Gunner (almost exclusively). I've been buying 1,000 a month for quite a while, and both (or one or the other) will offer a 1,000 round (115gr fmj 9mm) sometimes as low as $239, plus tax and shipping. Typically, depending on the supply chain issues THAT month, 1,000 rounds for $249. Never had any problems with the ammo. Ever.

They used to be in Houston, but they had some financial trouble a few years ago and burned some relationships with customers. After seeing your post I found online that they have been running under a new owner who moved operations to Idaho. Glad to hear they are back in the game and doing alright.

Best place on line for shotgun ammo (at least for bird hunting) is South Georgia Outdoor. They have every load you need from turkey to duck to dove. Best prices and high brass loads always available. Just bought 2 cases Rio (very reliable ammo) of high brass 6's & 8's. Great prices and very fast shipping, too!

You mention not paying tax from Bereli unless you live in Florida. I have purchased from Bereli a few times and always have to pay sales tax living here in Washington state. I know years ago you could get away with not paying sales tax but that is not the case any more.

Lucky Gunner is high. I stopped getting ammo from them years ago. They did have stock but I think it was because of higher prices.

SportsmansGuide is a good place. I can find deals on their site. And with membership, it is a couple of cents cheaper. They seem to be no worse on pricing than everyone else. Shipping is fast.

OpticsPlanet and Brownnell's are not a go-to for me either. Again, sometimes they will have a good price on something. But I shop these sites for other things too.

I usually will shop 6 different sites to find a good price and out of these 8, I have shopped half of them. I know right now Winchester has a rebate going on for rifle ammo. - Aug 15th thru Sep 30th webpage winchestercom Rebates 2023-Winchester-Target-Rifle-Ammunition-Rebate

Rather than reading articles and cruising every big-name website for sales, just go to AmmoSeek. Pwe Pew won't let me list the URL, but it's easy to find. You get up-to-the-moment listings of scores of ammo sites that are refreshed at short intervals. It will tell you the cost/rd, bulk deals, and you can search by caliber with filters for the type of load, reman, new, etc. It also provides a rating system for the shipping costs and reviews by buyers to help you steer away from bad sites and to good ones.

The big sites like the article lists are fine, but generally much more expensive than the deals you can find on AmmoSeek. I've been using it for well over 15 years without a single bad experience.

I discovered Freedom Munitions in Lewiston, Idaho early in the Great Ammo Shortage. Freedom manufactures and sells their own ammunition, and also sells higher end ammo made by Barnes, et al. Freedom's ammo performs on par with the better name brands, and at significantly lower prices. Their shipping charges are also among the lowest I've seen.

Once the rounds are out of the box and in the magazine, no one knows what brand I'm shooting. They just know my ammo goes bang every time.

Eric, you mention Walmart in passing (you didn't recommend them though and that's good).

I don't know if you're aware, but Walmart changed their Corporate Policy about 5 or 6 years ago. They now no longer carry any calibers commonly used in ARs or AKs and no longer carry any pistol ammunition, other than .22 LR. Some stores might still have stock on hand of some calibers, but once it's gone, it won't be replenished.

I've heard rumor that they exempted stores in Alaska, but I've not had any verification of that.

There was talk about 7.62 X 51/.308 going too, but last time I checked, our local store still had it on the shelf.

One place you didn't mention is Freedom Munitions. They sel both Factory Reloads and New Mfg. too.

Like most, you've got to watch the prices, and know what the price is from other sellers to get the best prices. Their Factory Reloads are excellent, and that's one way to save some bucks too.

As you said, they go bang and I've found their 5.56 XM855s to rival New in velocity and groups.

I've been a reloader for 45+ years, so I don't buy much New ammo, unless I run across really great deals, except for my carry guns, or when getting into a new (New for me anyway) caliber.

Good article. Like most, I've always got my eye out for a bargain, so appreciate the info

I agree.. They also have always had stock available whenever I've bought from them.

I don't buy much since I reload, but this year so far, I've bought about 20 or so boxes from them, and have been pleased with the turnaround. For my area, 5 to 10 days. 5 being the fastest and 10 the longest. I can't complain about that for economy shipping. Prices are good too.

Avoid getting it shipped by UPS if at all possible. UPS has been known to confiscate and destroy gun-related products, and they don't compensate the shipper or receiver.

Fedex does some of that, but my understanding is that UPS is the most hard-core on this issue.

As far as I know, there is no such issue with the US Postal Service.

SG Ammo is my "go to" for defensive ammo. While I order a lot of things from Bereli (Great customer service, by the way), But if I'm looking for federal HST +p 9 mm (My go-to "social" round), I go to SG Ammo. And to be fair, Target Sports is my third favorite option.

confusion abounds with shipments of ammo to NY now with the new laws. These suppliers need to get their facts right or lose a lot of biz. Palmetto recently lost a $1600 ammo sale to me thinking my NY FFL needs another "license" to receive ammo. NOT!! Only if the recipient is NOT also an FFL. Others are asking for the FFL DOB and Occupation!! NOT! that is only on point of sale from the FFL to the in state purchaser purchaser. Gun control at it's finest. C'mon SOCUS! STEP UP and dump these laws.

Slugs? Most indoor ranges near me require slugs. Seems like these cost more than the other loads, so I really need to best prices on slugs.

WikiArms is an excellent aggregation site for seeing what's in stock and the price per round across multiple sites. If you want say something sorta niche like 300BLK subsonics but you don't want to pay the pandemic prices, this is an excellent site. The sites you listed are all good, but I question places like Cabela's who rarely have *good* prices. A lot of smaller places end up with stock they need to move so they lower the prices. Most will also do free shipping for certain minimums. (I would include a link but apparently URLs are blocked in comments)

Have you checked out Palmetto State's deal on Sierra Sports Master yet? Pre-pandemic prices* on 9mm pd** ammo!?!

*Almost. With mail in rebate. Maybe.

**May be more suitable as semi-wadcutter for plinking (and competition?)

Since this original article was written (back in 2016) many things have changed and unfortunately for the worse. However, SGammo still has the best prices and the fastest delivery of whatever they have on hand. Sign up for their email newsletter and you won't be disappointed. Gunbot is another "aggregator" that should be noted as well.

I agree with Michael’s comment. I’ve been ordering from SGammo for 4 years now. I have never had a single problem, ever. Currently, any order over $200 ships free and their prices have been consistently the best around. They process orders same day most of the time and I regularly get the order on day 2 or 3. If you like supporting small business like I do with exceptional shipping, prices and services, these are your guys.

Have to second the True Shot recommendation. Even with shipping, they are cheaper for 9mm/.223/5.56 than anywhere over the past year. Mostly PMC, but frequently on sale and often in deals with Magpul 30rd mags. Even with shipping from AZ to the mid-Atlantic, still cheaper than buying in store at Rural King, Dunhams, Cabelas or Sportsman's Emporium. Never an issue. Highly recommend!

Lucky Gunner demanded a copy of my driver's license to "prove" I was old enough to buy ammo. Ammoman did the same thing and the web page looked identical. Has Lucky Gunner acquired Ammoman? None of the other vendors named in this article did that. (I still live in a free state.) What's up with this? No business for these vendors until they quit asking for driver's licenses.

I will say lucky gunner has been my go-to for bulk ammo, they seem to have rather good prices and even most of the ammo crunches seem to have stuff in stock. Mind you during the ammo shortages just don't be a cheap b!t@h. I ended up with higher quality 9mm because the cheap stuff was sold out, but you get others that complain about it. I haven't purchased ammo from PSA yet....just an AK, and M&P police trade-in plus EOTech. The thing that's awesome about them is they have great deals of the day. Mind you it says that so don't expect that deal the following day.

I've been using supplymunitions dot com for around 1.5 years now. They send very regular emails with their current stock and prices, which have been some of the lowest prices I've found. Hence the reason I buy probably 80% of my ammo from them. Quick delivery, and have never had any issues. I've purchased CCI Blazer, Winchester, Remington, PMC, Hornady, and others from them.

I live in CA and it's always tough buying ammo. Palmetto State Armory has good prices, the ammo I receive is always packed well, in perfect condition, and ships out in a reasonable time. It's no Amazon 2 day Prime, but they beat their own 3 weeks they give themselves for CA FFL shipments.

It's amazing how many places like ammo_com don't sell to CA. CA is second only to Texas for the number of registered gun owners.

You should add a couple of more online ammo dealers to this list. They offer bulk ammo at very reasonable prices with no shipping charges if ordering over 100.00. Please see these websites for some excellent prices. As any other dealer, stock varies but excellent prices. Velocity Ammo and Ammoman. These are my go to ammo dealers.

Gunbroker dot com can lead to the best prices. Never buy that Russian or former Soviet block countries ammo. Garbage. Hornady, Federal, Winchester for me. And 556 and 308 primarily from the Lake City plant. Special calibers you probably have to buy that foreign crap, but we're only using it on the range, right? Buffalo Bore is by far some of the best. Pricey, but worth every penny.

If you order ammo from Bereli, be aware that their "free shipping" is probably free because you'll NEVER GET YOUR ORDER. You also won't get any support - after one message saying, "Yeah we'll check on it", they will totally ghost you. Nobody answers at the phone number. I don't care if it's their fault, or FedEx's fault - not my problem. I've ordered A LOT of ammo online in the past 2 years, and with one exception (other than Bereli) it's arrived in less than a week, properly packaged. Even the one problem shipment in that time got here, and their Support folks were very helpful. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is - avoid Bereli for Ammo.

i've placed my order with them on the same day [03/08] you've posted this comment, regrettably i never saw it... i'm in the same situation... ordered 500 rds of 5.56 win green tipped fmj in 62gr and 500 rds of 9mm cc blazer brass 115gr ammo, altogether paid $535...placed my order, got a confirmation and nothing...after 7 days e-mailed them and that's when the runaround began... today is march 23rd so 15 days since i placed my order with bereli and just found out from fedex [using a tracking number bereli sent me last week which has a 'pending' status] that fedex is STILL awaiting that parcel from bereli... the 'customer service' is downright rude, each reply is a short single - or half - sentence, no apology, no useful info, no name signature of whom i'm dealing with, not even a 'hi'... this ammo vendor must be nixed from this list... i gave them a chance because of this bloody article above which made me think bereli's a trusted, honest vendor...

I have an update for you. I sent them a message via every support email address I could find (3, I think) and was contacted by a VP, who made it right (they had run out of the brand of 9 mm I ordered, so he sent another (comparable) brand, at no charge to me. FYI, my order was for 1000 rounds. Needless to say, I was shocked, but pleased with that. I don't want to put his email address out on a public forum, though. One more thing you might try, if you use Twitter (my wife does - I don't touch it ;-) - when you put a comment out there on a company's channel, good things tend to happen fast. maybe Facebook too? (I don't use that either ;-). I bought due to the review in this article as well, BTW. Good luck - I feel your pain.

hey, thanks for that very prompt reply... i don't even have a twitter acct [and never will]... i log into my facebook acct these days only to call a couple of friends overseas from my laptop via messenger 1-2 monthly but maybe i could try their facebook page; although i suspect it'll be answered by the same rude customer svc person who answers e-mails...

i don't want to post my e-mail here in public either because i'd be crushed by resulting spam but maybe i could post my facebook's profile page and you could then send me that vp's e-mail address via messenger?... you'd first have to send me a friend request i think... i don't know if posting one's facebook profile here is even allowed or it might be deleted automatically but it could be worth a try... i don't care much about sharing my fb profile, my name's there but so what, at least i'd still be safe from spam hehe... please let me know if you'd be willing to pass that bereli vp's e-mailin such a manner... if i could reach a vp i'm sure he'd want to make things right...

The VP just sent me what I was owed - 1000 rounds 9 mm FMJ - it was a replacement with a comparable brand - they had run out of the Magtech by that point. So he "made it right". I would try FB and the following email addresses (redacted because this board removes emails and URLs):

orders (at Bereli-dot-com)

support (at Bereli-dot-com)

admin (at Bereli-dot-com)

If you set up an account with them, you can go to the Account page and click on the "Messages" tab - you can send a message from there as well. If no luck, I'd dispute the charge on my CC, and start over :-(.

ok, i misunderstood, i thought he actually gifted you that order... instead, he did the basic decent thing and that's all i want of course...

until i'll get my refund i can't put any more charges on any of my c/cards so it's like they took my money and ripped e off for that amount as things stand at present... i'm severely disabled [c6 quad] in a wheelchair for the past 32 years so living off a fixed monthly disability income doesn't allow me to have much 'reserve' in my budget...

i did both of those addresses except for the last one [admin] because at first i sent my e-mail using the order confirmation e-mail notice, then followed up with sending them another message 2 hours later via their contact us webpage, just in case the e-mail was blocked at their server [no reply address , etc]... but thanks for the suggestions and trying to help out nevertheless...

after i called fedex earlier today and found out that my 'outgoing shipment' is still not even in fedex' possession, i sent bereli another e-mail requesting that my order e immediately canceled and i'd receive my refund by the week's end... i then logged into my acct at bereli and - because the order's status there has been stuck on 'shipped' since last friday - i couldn't cancel it so i used the 'order return' function and included a message explaining that my order has been severely botched on bereli's end and fedex inforrmed me it hasnt even made it to them yet so that i was requesting an immediate cancellation and refund... no reply, confirmation or any response on their part regarding that request...

yeah, i'm saving that credit card dispute as a last resort for another week or so... i've had to do this once 4-5 years ago and it was akin to a a major bummer emergency visit to a dentist when the anesthesia didn't work for sh.t and a nasty multiple extraction was involved [also speaking from experience here hehe]...

the painful process seemed to last forever and it never fully solved the issue...plus i wanted to punch the dentist [errr... i mean the c/card customer svc] very hard in the face at least thrice...

in light of all of this, i think that bereli and any 'aammo deal' links should be deleted from this list of vendors... how does one even logs in here to make a new comment to the unfortunate article?...al i'm able to do is to reply directly to others' comments but unable to post my own...i think i'll have tto send an e-mil to pewpew itself and request this; we can't be the only ones that were treated thus by this vendor...

anyway, thank you for the reply and trying to help out man... all the best...

I have no problem at all finding ammo, whether at local stores or on line. It sounds to me like someone is trying to keep the prices up, by scaring everyone to horde in mass quantities.

I'm a little shocked not to see SGAmmo or bulkammo here.

Cabelas doesn't even sell ammo online and hasn't for as long as I can remember. PSA is decent, Lucky Gunner is decent. Sportsman's Guide goes from below the curve if you don't have their membership, to above the curve if you do, but their inventory is a little screwy from time to time.

Locally(Red States))we have no problem finding ammo, much less have to buy on line. People buying in mass quantities is only helps fuel the high prices, and the so called shortage. Every time Media says Ammo Shortage gunners or(those who want to price gouge)panic and start buying again allowing prices jump.

If you're also finding it at a half-decent price (say 30-35 cents per round for 9 mm, 50 cents/round or less for 5.56 - both BRASS casing - consider yourself fortunate, Sir ;-). Also note that some of us buy in bulk, due to the desire to stock up in case SHTF. That's challenging for me to do locally.

Yeah they absolutely do, I just ordered ammo online from Cabelas 5 minutes ago, I've learned that if you normally use their app you won't be able to buy guns or ammo, BUT, if you use their website online, not the app, you can, their selection isn't the greatest but they have what I needed

Cabelas is a waste of time and makes me wonder if the author has ever even used them. They don’t sell ammo online and they don’t give you inventory levels. They carry about 5% of there online listed inventory in store. So it honestly is the biggest waste of time one could ask for…. Yet it’s listed here. Makes all the other suggestions questionable.

I have fairly good luck buying from MidwayUSA, they are my go-to for a lot of gun related purchases.

As far as locally, don't forget your local farm and fleet store, in my area we have Runnings Farm and Fleet. Also, Dunhams Sports is another good local retailer with ammo. In my area, both are starting to get ammo stocks back in.

Even though Walmart no longer carries 223/5.56 or 9mm, they do still stock .22, 12 guage and 308/7.62x51, since each of these are also considered hunting rounds. I've been picking up white box Winchester 308 for around $20.00/box, but at least it's available. I'm also a Walmart employee so I can also get my employee discount.

Recently I've found that Buds Gun Shop has had the lowest ammo prices and the lowest shipping prices. They don't always have the exact brand I'm looking for, but they usually have a good substitute. Every time I've checked their prices against the best prices on AmmoSeek, Buds has been within $0.01/round of the lowest prices. Shipping for a small order is $10. For a medium-sized order, it's $12.

California residents should avoid 2A warehouse. They are impossible to get in contact with, both via phone and email. They refused to ship my order of reloading parts because the CA address. I kept getting the auto email requiring a FFL to ship my brass. They then want to charge a 10% restocking fee. Do not buy from them if you live in CA.

lars,

Generally, Democrat states and city governments (usually in heavily populated urban areas) have conducted an on going war on gun ownership in the US for decades. Ironically, those areas that have the most restrictive ownership laws have generally had the most violent history of weapons abuse. The vast majority of LEGAL gun owners in the US do not abuse their right to own and bear arms.

I've found that SGAmmo.com has the best prices and low shipping. They don't always have what I'm looking for, but when they do, they are my number one preference.

This reprint is getting old. And the no sales tax, if I buy from a shop in Missouri I'm charged TX sales tax +shipping.

I am not sure if you have done all of the research.

No sgammo.com? Prices have been competitive and they have worked with foreign ammunition manufacturers to bring some interesting offerings to our shores. I have never had any issues with shipping or quality of product. Been using them for nearly a decade.

I second that. I've been using them for about 6 years and have bought more ammo from them and Freedom Munitions, than anyone else. Both have fast secure shipping, and both have competitive prices, on what they have in stock.

buying ammo in today's market is insane. time looking for "in stock" items only to find out when you go to place your order and the item is surprise, on back order with no eta. also the ammo prices are ridiculous, 2,3,4 times the msrp. and as long as the shooting public are willing to pay these highly inflated prices they will keep charging them. does anyone really think the pricing will come down when product is available? i refuse to be blackmailed into paying these prices and if that means i quit shooting, so be it. i don't like being treated like a fool!

I'm looking for .40 caliber bullets. For the most part I have shot 165 grain, but not to sure how the grain weight affects my shooting if I was to change to something different. Any suggestions where to find it?

Screw palmetto now, no free shipping on ammo or most items now, by the time they tax tennessee now and shipping charges if ammo was 75 cents a round it's now 110. Tn used not be taxed, but they could at least do free shipping like other stores. Not only that all their prices are outrages now. Cheap pal. Lower used to be 30 bucks now a 100 nty, I'll get a better brand for that.

In my experience online is more expensive these days. When my local Bi-Mart has ammo in stock it becomes clear just how much online retailers price gouge. Online 9mm is $0.60 at best, locally I spend $0.20-0.30.

DO NOT Buy from Lucky Gunner!!! they are picking and choosing what states to sell to!! last week of March we tried to buy 22lr ammo from Lucky Gunner at the end of the order they came back with a message that said We Can NOt sell to customers in the state of Oklahoma.. when calling and asking why we got several answers one, your state laws..( Bullshit there) ask your Governor it is his fault... Bull shit again we are conservative state and have no such laws.. then covid was the reason... SO do not buy from Lucky Gunner... Crappy Ass company

Although, in all fairness, I have to say that I went back and discovered that the S/H stayed constant, even though the number of rounds went up. This greatly improved the cost per round. Bottom line, if you want a couple hundred rounds, you can probably match or beat the prices locally, but if you are willing to buy in lots of 500 rounds or more, you can make some significant savings.

Eric,

I reload most of my ammunition, except .22's of course, but do make frequent purchases of .22 LR & 9mm for my pistols. I do price comparison shopping on line. 9 out of 10 times I purchase from "Cabela's" when they have a sale and are offering free S/H on $99 orders. My last order was for 300 rds. of PMC 62 gr. 5,56mm green tipped ammo. $119 delivered (zero sales taxes in my state) and it comes with a $15 dollar "Plano" (with Cabela's name on it) 50 cal. plastic storage box. Now that's a good deal on some very good ammo. .33 cents a round when one removes my Cabela's discount and cost of storage box. Sportsman's Guide also offers some great prices on ammo (not always though) with frequent free S/H offers on orders as low as $45. Best if you join their shopping club to receive the best discounts, price and free S/H. I've been with them over 4 years now.

Watch out for the shady tactics of FREEDOM MUNITIONS. They offer free shipping and then jack up the ammo price to cover it. In my case, my total bill with "free shipping" as a new customer, was more than if I had just bought it outright! They offered to give me 5% off on my next purchase... Seriously? Why would I ever deal with these clowns again?

where I'm getting confused is where I just bought a Salvage F62. Planned on using both FMJ for target and HP for self defense, but have been advised by various references - including Salvage - not to use Hollow Points in this rifle, as have tendency to jam. Ofcourse there if nothing in the owners manual that mentions this. So when someone goes to buy a 22 cal,- regardless of brand - how are they to know this.

Hi Eric,

Love your site and articles. I recently decided to buy a firearm for the first time for home defense and chose the S&W M&P M2.0 9mm. My question is, what is the best brands of ammo to buy for the gun whether FMJ or Hollow Point. Your insight is greatly appreciated.

Hey Malcolm, I'd get a bunch of FMJ for practice and some hollow points for defense. Also make sure to actually shoot those HP's to make sure they run smoothly in your gun. This article should help: https://www.pewpewtactical.com/best-9mm-ammo-self-defense-range/

I'm a little surprised not to see Midway on here as it ticks a lot of the boxes for me - good prices, accurate inventory, usually next day shipping. Granted, I've not tried the other sites (probably will try at least a couple to compare) and YMMV but so far so good for me with them.

Hi Dean. I Checked out your site and the prices look good - until I added shipping. What started out as a very competitive $.40/rd turned into $.73/rd after shipping. I'd love to support your site, but I can't justify the nearly double price. I'd have to buy 500 rds to make it worth while.

Hi Allen, I would recommend Lucky Gunner which is linked first in this article. I actually don't have any experience with the .44 Spl but I usually go with whatever is cheapest for practice and then a well-reviewed JHP (jacketed hollow point) round for defense.

David A Matz

Hi Eric,

Really enjoy your insights and valuable information. I'm a geriatric greenhorn, and recently qualified for CC. Bought a Glock 19, Gen 4, and spend considerable time soaking up articles and YouTube tutorials. Also do a lot of dry practice/fire 3-5 times weekly. Appreciate that you provide a great deal of useful information to new enthusiasts.

My experience with the couple of local gun shops has not been positive. Seems that all the ostensible friendliness and willingness to help ended when the receipt was handed to me. I now need to buy a quality IWB holster and gun belt. I'm clueless, and have been all over the internet as well as YouTube.

Would greatly appreciate your input on what products/makers I should rely upon for quality, durability, comfort, and affordability regarding the holster and gun belt.

My apologies in advance for the length of this post.

Thank you, and wishing your continued success.

Hi David, thanks so much for the comments and glad I've helped you out a little.

However, I might be in the same boat as you for IWB holsters since I don't have a CCW license yet. But for belts I've always been a fan of Uncle Mike's and regular non-IWB holsters I've always like Safariland.

A good gun holster is made by Crossbreed for IWB carry. I have three of them. I have seen reviews on Alienware holsters that they are extremely comfortable so you might want to check those out.

Alien gear holsters are great. Not only are they comfortable but they have a lifetime warranty. Plus if you ever switch to another gun, you just contact them and tell them what new gun you have and they'll swap out the shell for the new gun at no charge. You just pay the shipping. I've been using their holsters for years and I have about 7 handguns. Every time I get rid of one and get a new one they just replace the shell for my new gun.

Plus they always have sales on combos if you buy more than one holster. No I don't work for them, I'm just a loyal customer. Lol

Hi Vinay, thanks for the question! I don't have a .357 magnum myself yet (on the list!) but have shot several of my friends'. For practice rounds I would go with .38 special since those will most likely fit in your revolver. They are much cheaper and you can get used to the reduced recoil too. Home defense rounds just get something hollow point. The sheer power of the .357 will take care of the rest! I would recommend Gold Dot or Federal.

Use Ammohead's filtering options you can browse by ammunition category and across nearly a dozen online retailers selling their ammo online. Compare ammo by price, brand, caliber and more. Thank you for using Ammohead!

Officially released on the Fourth of July, Ammohead is in beta mode. That means it’s still under development and could have “bugs” relating to sorting, ammo search results, display speed and so forth. We appreciate your patience.

Browse Ammo by Category

Ammunition grouped by firearm type and caliber.

Rifle Ammo

Bulk ammo, specialty ammo sorted by caliber

Handgun Ammo

Handgun and pistol ammo sorted by caliber

Shotgun Shells

Other

Please note that Ammohead uses affiliate links to fund this site. That means Ammohead may earn a small commission on an order you place after clicking a link to an ammo seller listed on Ammohead. We do not rank ammo by earnings potential, payout or sponsorship. Our aim is to help you find the most relevant and affordable ammo online.

Ammohead Sponsors

Extreme Ammunition Sellout Risk Our ammo feeds are updated daily from trusted partners; however, ammo demand is extremely high. We apologize if what you find listed at Ammohead is already sold out (in that case we recommend you check for ammo at Lucky Gunner).
